Calculator Use and Tutorials

Graphing, scientific and 4-function calculators are permitted or provided for some Praxis tests. Unless it’s specifically stated that a calculator is permitted for a particular test, you can’t use one.

 

Tests that permit you to bring a calculator

The Middle School: Content Knowledge (5146) test allows you to use a 4-function or scientific calculator, though you aren’t required to do so.

  • If you plan to use one, you must bring it. The test center won’t provide one.
  • You won’t be able to share a calculator with another test taker.
  • Graphing calculators aren’t permitted.
  • If your test has an on-screen calculator, you can’t bring your own.

Types of calculators that aren’t permitted

The following are not permitted on Praxis tests:

  • portable/handheld computers or laptops
  • electronic writing pads
  • models with pen-input/stylus/touch-screen capability
  • calculators on any phones, watches or other electronic devices
  • models with QWERTY or other alphabetic keypads as part of hardware or software
  • models with printers
  • models that make noise or "talk"
  • models that require an electrical outlet
  • models that can access the internet OR have wireless or Bluetooth® capability
  • models that have a camera, scanning capability or digital audio/video player recording/player capability

In addition, the use of any hardware peripherals is not allowed.

On-screen scientific calculator

The following tests provide an on-screen scientific calculator, the TI-30XS MultiView™.

  • Elementary Education: Content Knowledge (5018)
  • Elementary Education: Mathematics Subtest (5003)
  • Elementary Education: Three Subject Bundle—Mathematics Subtest (5903) 
  • Elementary Education: Science Subtest (5005)
  • Elementary Education: Three Subject Bundle—Science (5905) 
  • Fundamental Subjects: Content Knowledge (5511) 

On-screen graphing calculator

The following tests provide an on-screen graphing calculator, the TI-84 Plus CE.

  • Mathematics: Content Knowledge (5161)
  • Algebra I (5162)
